When you get off at Hoshikawa Station in Yokohama, you’ll suddenly want to eat some local Chinese food.

Modern photogenic food is good, but there’s something nostalgic about the taste that fills your stomach and your heart.

This time, I visited Iseya, which is just a short walk from Hoshikawa Station.

I entered the restaurant with the conviction that “this place must be right” as I saw local people passing through one after another.

Surrounded by a retro and warm atmosphere, I enjoyed Yokohama’s specialty, Sanmamen!

We will introduce its charms in detail ♪

Just a short walk from Hoshikawa Station! Traditional local Chinese restaurant Iseya

The restaurant is about 8 minutes walk from Hoshikawa Station.

The exterior of Iseya

The aged sign are the landmarks. It’s like a scene from the Showa era has been preserved, and it makes my heart pound.

The restaurant has counter seats and table seats, with a total of about 10 seats. At lunchtime, it is already almost full, and regulars keep coming in one after another.

Retro posters are on the walls, and local news is playing on the TV. It’s the ideal “local Chinese restaurant”.

Crunchy vegetables are the star! Hot Sanmamen

Iseya's Sanmamen

On this day, I had the popular dish “Sanmamen” (800 yen), which is also available at Iseya.

This local ramen originated in Yokohama, and is characterized by a soy sauce-based soup topped with a thickened vegetable paste.

The steam from the Sanmamen that was brought to me was enough to whet my appetite…!

The vegetables are plentiful, including bean sprouts, chives, and cabbage, and have a pleasant crunchy texture. They are stir-fried to perfection, and the flavor slowly seeps into the soup.

The soup has a sharp yet gentle soy sauce flavor, and when combined with the sweetness of the vegetables, it becomes an addictive taste.

The medium-thick straight noodles are thick and piping hot until the very end. I was sweating as I ate it enthusiastically!

The katsudon is actually popular… but there are some things to be careful of!

Looking around the restaurant, I saw a few people ordering Chinese rice bowls and set menus in addition to the sanmamen.

The one that caught my eye was the katsudon.

It was very filling and looked delicious!

However… you need to be a little careful when ordering a katsudon.

The staff actually told me that it can take more than 30 minutes from the time the katsudon was ordered until it was served.

The reason is that they carefully prepare everything one by one, from cutting the meat to coating it in batter, frying it, and finishing it by dipping it in sauce.

This is not suitable for a quick lunch, but it is a dish you should definitely try if you want to have a leisurely lunch.

Next time, I want to try it with plenty of time…!

The warmth and comfort of a local Chinese restaurant

The appeal of Iseya is not just the taste of the food.

The warm hospitality of the owner and the proprietress, the friendly conversations with the regulars, and the interior of the restaurant with a nostalgic atmosphere.

Even if you visit alone, it is comfortable and you can spend a relaxing time.

The time you spend leisurely slurping sanmamen at the counter is exceptional.

The best part of a local Chinese restaurant is in these places.
